8. Why does SVG use XML, DOM, and XLink (e.g., xlink:href)?

· Why a problem?
o SVG could have been so much more lean and faster, and (some argue) better
· Why does SVG use those technologies?
o Back in 1998-2000 (when all the key decisions were made), W3C leadership believed XML, DOM, and XLink were the future of the Web
o WhatWG and HTML5 happened years later
· Same sort of explanation applies to many other SVG language features
o We are a lot smarter now about web development (and lots of other things) than we were in 1998-2000
