Why you are taking this course

Most are taking this course to complete the SRU computer competency requirement – a few are taking it for other reasons. The computer competency requirement was created to ensure that every student understands the basics of computers before they are awarded a degree. There are other courses that can be taken to complete this requirement also.

As you have chosen this course, we can assume that you are taking it to learn some of the basic concepts of computing. Let's face it (together). If you didn't pass the competency exam, you either had a really bad day or you have not been paying much attention to computers.

This course is not connected to the test! A few people have registered for the course before taking the test and then passed the test. Like any other course, you are still registered for the class. In such an odd circumstance, make sure you withdraw officially from the course. Otherwise, you will be assigned a "NC" and that's not something you want prospective employers to see on a transcript.

This course is not based on the test! The test is basically a way to show that you do not need this course. Like any other course, the department determines the content in an outline form. The individual instructor then chooses a text, how to present the material, assignments, tests, etc., and, eventually determines what your grade will be.

Nor, is the test based on this course! The test is developed and maintained separately and, in a sense, has to do with (currently) any of four possible courses.

There are some invalid reasons for taking the course. In this class, you will not learn how to use various applications, like word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. You will also not learn how to program. Those topics are not covered in this course! We talk about them a bit, but we don't actually do them.
