What is in this module?

We talked about networks a little in the Internet module (you may want to glance back). We have since (and previously) just assumed that you were somehow connected to the Internet. So, we begin by rounding out our understanding of networks in general, including terms like gateways and routers. How networks work is relevant to your campus lab, office and home.

The focus shifts to home networks, but only because that is where you are most likely to apply the knowledge. Building an office network is the same thing, with some additional concern for security.

Most home networks use wireless, to avoid having to retrofit wiring. New homes (offices) may well be pre-wired for networking, perhaps even with fiber optics. Wireless creates a security issue, this is true whether it's in your home, office, or the local coffee shop. So, we discuss setting up a network and some of the security options.

There's one step to using the Internet we have still skipped and that is getting (and using) an Internet Service Provider. We describe the kinds of ISPs in general terms and compare services.

We end with a rapidly growing area of computing, networks for an individual: personal area networks.

Why this material is included?

Perspective
student Home wireless networks are now common. You use LANs at school and in hotspots. And you will have to choose an ISP, probably many times during your life. Someone in your home manages the wireless network – why should it not be you?
professional As the most knowledgable person in your workplace, it is reasonable to assume you might be asked to setup and manage the office LAN.
citizen of a digital society Referring to the Internet as a "series of tubes" may be understandable, but you need to know enough to chuckle (or cringe).
Decisions regarding privacy and security – at home, in the office, and in Congress – can have a major impact on your life.
course goals Overview of network concepts
Wireless computing
Factors impacting the performance of a network
Privacy, security, threats and vulnerabilities
instructor goals Understand how to set up a wireless home network
Understand the concept of personal area networks
